I, the founder of The Herndon Herald, came across Dave the cat on one of my runs on W&OD Trail after moving to Herndon four years ago. While I am the first to admit that I've had a tenuous relationship with cats in the past, my fiancée was eager to approach the surprisingly friendly feline. Like many, my fiancée saw the collar and assumed he’d snuck out and so we called the owner only to learn that Dave is a town staple on this trail. After many messages about him every time we post him on our Herndon Herald socials, I thought it was time to learn a little more about everyone’s friend Dave.

Dave came into his owner's life after a lucky find on Petfinder when he was rescued from an animal shelter. He’s now eight years old, and the shelter only noted that he was found as a stray. The name Dave is a nod to Dave Foley and “The Daves I know.”

At home, Dave is a laid-back loaf...he loves his naps. But on the W&OD Trail in Herndon, he’s all energy, stretching his legs and exploring with bright curiosity. He’s been visiting the trail since 2020, shortly after he was adopted.

Three words to describe Dave according to his owner: friendly, social, active. He’s become a recognizable local figure; the owner jokes they get about five calls a day about him. The attention seems to suit Dave when he’s not snoozing at home, he’s likely patrolling the path, charming locals, and living his best cat life on the trail.

Personally, I love running into Dave and secretly joke with my fiance that anytime we see him on the trail that means it will be a great week! But it's not only us that he's had an impact on. Hundreds, if not thousands have encountered Dave on their walks, runs, and bike rides cheerfully approaching this playful cat that brings joy to so many people's lives.
